As we age, the elasticity of the facial skin diminishes, this is due to the reduction of fats below the epidermis and loss of hydration. This causes the skin to hang more loosely and reduces definition and contour in the face. Just like collagen, the body produces hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring polysaccharide located in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is essential for keeping the skin hydrated, thanks to its ability to bind and retain water molecules. Hyaluronic acid is found in abundance in a youthful face but decreases as we age. Dermal fillers are comprised of a synthetic form of Hyaluronic acid and can be injected into the face to restore lost volume. This treatment aims to smooth lines, wrinkles and folds and can add definition, contour or volume to extensive facial areas.
